Top Tips for Making Revision Effective

Revision is an inevitable part of academic success, but many students struggle with revising effectively. So, here are some top tips to make the most out of your revision time…

Choose the right workspace

Concentration is key when revising and your environment is an important factor to consider. Although revising in the comfort of your bed may seem very tempting, it’s not an environment that will fuel concentration. Whereas sitting at a desk in a quiet room where you can fully focus will. Generally, a quiet, well lit room is the key ingredient to finding the best workspace.

Get enough sleep

Sleep is so important, but is often underestimated, especially when students have a lot of revision to fit into a short period of time. Getting a goodnight’s rest is vital and has a significant impact on concentration levels. When we’re well rested we’re better able to retain the information we’re revising.

Eat well

Diet is incredibly important and certain foods have an effect on how energetic we feel. Nutritious meals including lots of fruit and vegetables provide a good source of fuel for focus. However, sugary food and junk food don’t offer the necessary nourishment. It’s ok to indulge and enjoy certain foods, but as long as it’s part of a balanced diet. Consider having a healthy snack whilst you revise and a sweet treat as a reward to increase motivation.

Take regular breaks

Taking small, regular breaks from revision helps to recharge and refocus the mind. If you’re revising using digital materials like your phone, tablet or laptop, giving your eyes a break from the screen will really help. Incorporating breaks into your revision will also boost motivation and help to foster a positive attitude to revising.

Exercise

Exercise serves as a great way to take a break from revision, let off some steam and give the mind a break. Whether it’s hitting the gym, going for a walk, or pursuing a sport, what matters most is movement. Whichever form of exercise you decide to pursue, make sure it’s enjoyable.

Make a revision timetable

Planning your time is key, especially in the run up to exams when you have limited time. Creating a revision timetable is an excellent way to plan your revision and holds you accountable, which is so important on those days where you just feel like being lazy.
