Revision is a key ingredient to exam success and can be approached in many different ways. If you’re struggling to find what revision techniques work best for you, try giving some of these methods a go…
Bullet Point Notes:
If you’re more of an organised person and have a logical mind, this approach may work best for you. Breaking down your subject into topics is a good place to start as this can form the subheadings of your notes. Writing a series of concise bullet points under each subheading is a great way to record key notes and refer to them in the run up to your exam. These can be done digitally on a Word document, or with the traditional pen and paper.
Spider Diagrams:
If you’re more of a creative person, spider diagrams may suit you best as they’re a great way of serving as a creative outlet by putting pen to paper. Using a piece of paper per topic will help to make sure you have enough space to jot down your notes. Starting by putting the name of the topic in the centre, then brainstorming the facts you already know is a good way to test your current knowledge. You can then conduct some further research and fill in any gaps as you go along.
Mind Mapping:
Similar to spider diagrams, mind mapping offers a creative way of revising, but in a more structured way. Instead of writing down everything associated with your chosen topic, you break it down into sub-topics and make a series of small spider diagrams around the page. This helps to categorise your notes, making them more organised.
Flash Cards:
Flash cards are an excellent way of refining your detailed notes into smaller, concise notes. Focusing on the key facts of each topic, or the facts you struggle to remember, is a good way of condensing them. They are especially useful as a tool in the run up to your exam as they are short and simple, allowing you to fully focus on retaining core information.
Voice Notes:
If you’re more of an auditory learner and don’t find note taking effective, you may want to try recording a series of voice notes on your phone for you to listen to. This is especially effective if you’re out and about or doing daily chores as you can multitask by listening to your revision notes.
Experimenting with different revision techniques is an effective way of seeing which methods suit you best and adding some variety to the ways you revise. You may find that one in particular appeals to you, or you might find that you enjoy using all of them, there is no right or wrong way to revise, so find what resonates with you.
